Skin

Description

Skin is one of the largest organs of the body.  It consists of an epidermis and a dermis.  In the epidermis, cells move up to the surface as they develop and mature, and in doing so they release substances to allow the skin to be a barrier to outside toxins.

Skin and the movement of the cells through the layers is a fascinating subject.  I believe it is one of the first outward signs of aging.  Skin is our protection against the outside elements.  It has normal flora on its surface and natural moisturising factors which secrete through the epidermis.

With aging, skin like many organs in our body start to be less effective at its job.  The border between the epidermis and dermis is a wavy border, however as we age, this becomes flatter.

The dermis lies underneath the epidermis.  It contains fibroblasts which produce collagen.  There are blood vessels, collagen fibrils, lasting, and extracellular matrix which holds it all together.

There are many different treatments that approach different levels.

Trauma to the dermis activates the fibroblasts and just like the healing process it starts to produce more collagen.

There are different treatments that can be used to create trauma to activate this process, either by different pathways including:

  • equipment

  • small foreign particles

  • your own blood which adds platelets

  • vitamins, uncross linked hyaluronic acid to improve the extracellular matrix

Consultation

Every individuals skin has different needs.

We aim to develop a treatment plan.

However, just like the aging process which occurs over years, a treatment plan is required which is staged, and requires a gradual improvement of skin.  Different treatments are used to approach individual needs aimed at the different levels of the skin.

Aside from some treatments listed above, general good skin care is also required.  we provide advice on the following treatments and advice that aims to improve your skin such as:

  • Skin moisturisers

  • skin peels

  • Dietary advice

  • requirement for dermatological approach for conditions such as acne, rosacea or melanoma.

Please keep in mind that the impact on skin is not always immediate.  Skin takes about 2 weeks to rejuvenate, and with some treatments, the improvement may not be seen for at least a month.

Due to TGA restrictions imposed from 1 June 2024, we are not permitted to provide further detail as to the treatment even in the form of educational content.  Please be wary of promotional material from overseas which are in the form of advertising and do not provide adequate education.
