Chemical Skin Peeling

Treatment
Chemical peels are a great way to address skin texture, pigmentation and acne, as in general the superficial peels are associated with little down time.

Peels are differentiated into types based on the depth in the skin.

Skin has the outside epidermis. This has 4 basic layers from bottom to top are:
-
Stratum Basale
-
Stratum Spinosum
-
Stratum Granulosum
-
Stratum Corneum
-

What we use:

The superficial peels are the main ones used with little downtime or adverse events. These address different levels of the epidermis.

For example a very light peel will go to the stratum corneum.

These include:

Very light peels:

-
such as 10-20% TCA,
-
Low potency glycolyic acid (5-10%)
-
Salicylic acid or retinoid acid

Light peels:

-
which go to th e stratum granulosum and include:

-
-
20-50% Glycolyic acid
-
20-30% TCA
-
Jessner solution
-
What do they do?
They can be used for:

-
Acne
-
Skin regeneration
-
Pigmentation
-
Fine lines

How often should I have them?
Generally its better to start peels in winter where your sun exposure is less.
You can start in Summer with vigilance in application of SPF 50 and wearing protective clothing and headwear.

The treatment usually takes about 30 minutes.
Its best to initially undertake 3 treatments separated by 2 weeks.
Generally the skin re epithelialisation occurs in 7-10 days.

What to expect and downtime?
Most peels are left on the skin for about 5 minutes.
While the peel is on, it may feel a bit tingly and itchy.
They are then washed off with water, or a neutraliser is applied.

There is very little downtime, aside from a bit of redness for a few hours.
