Radiofrequency Facial

Description
Although lasers in the form of ablative and non ablative lasers remain the gold standard for photodamaged skin, their use can be associated with side effects and downtime.

Radiofrequency is different from cosmetic lasers in that it produces an electric current which is directed towards the dermis. Studies have suggest that the delivery of radio frequency below the skin surface reduces the chance of pigmentation when compared to ablative lasers. However individuals with melasma may be more susceptible as heat can aggravate melasma.

The purpose of radiofrequency is to deliver electric current to the dermal layers and produce collagen contraction which results in an immediate tightening. Collagen remodelling and formation of collagen can occur within subsequent months.

The other advantage of radiofrequency, is that unlike several lasers it can be used on darker phototypes.

Radiofrequency alone, unlike Radiofrequency micro needling does not involve needle administration. It will feel like heat on your face. The results is a softer result which has often been termed a Radiofrequency Facial and results in a glow appearance in the subsequent days.

More recently, this type of treatment has been used in other areas of the body, such as buttock and legs to improve the skin surface and reduce areas of dimpling. This can be used with other treatments such as biostimulators to enhance the result.
Consultation
Your treating practitioner will assess your skin and ensure that there are no contraindications to starting treatment. They may use a local anaesthetic cream for greater comfort. However in general the treatment is not painful and feels like a warmth on your skin. They will advise how often you may require this treatment.

The results may vary between individuals. It should be discussed with your practitioner for suitability and alternative treatment can be discussed. Although it may be effective with little downtime, like any medical process there can be side effects.
Post treatment and after care
After treatment, it is important to avoid placing ice blocks as it is the thermal injury resulting from the radiofrequency which results in collagen build up. Your skin may be sensitive in the first few days and it is recommended to avoid any active skin products.
Sun screen is also recommended during the day.
What to expect
This treatment is one step up from micro needling and is primarily to address issues with skin texture. It will not erase fine lines. However it may improve the result of photoaging. With multiple treatments over a 6 month period, continued improvement can be seen up to 3 months after,
